Get your bike ready for the race with tips from Shimano

Here is Shimano’s checklist on how to best prepare your bike before the race. It also includes frequently asked questions and answers on how to take care of your bike immediately after the race – and before your next ride.

To Do Before the Race

Service and Inspection
  • Make sure the gears shift smoothly
  • Check that the brakes are working properly
  • Bike service
Wear Parts and Components
  • Check the condition of the chain and replace it if necessary
  • Check the tyres for cracks or wear
  • Replace worn parts (e.g. chain, cassette, brake pads) well in advance
Comfort and Adjustments
  • Make sure the saddle, handlebars, and riding position feel comfortable
  • Replace the handlebar tape if necessary
  • Test the gloves and equipment you plan to use
Regular Maintenance
  • Clean the bike
  • Lubricate the chain

Things to Check the Day Before the Race

Tyres and Wheels
  • Check that the tyre pressure is correct using a pump with a pressure gauge
  • Make sure the tyres are in good condition and free from damage
  • Make sure the wheels are securely fastened
Brakes
  • Make sure the brakes engage immediately
  • Make sure you can stop the bike effectively
Quick Safety Check
  • Make sure the handlebars, stem, saddle, and bottle cages are securely fastened
  • Make sure all bolts are properly tightened
Function and Feel
  • Make sure the gears shift smoothly
  • Make sure the wheels spin freely
  • Make sure there are no unusual noises
Packing and Equipment
  • Make sure the batteries are fully charged (for electronic shifting systems)
  • Pack a spare tube and a CO₂ cartridge or mini pump in your saddle bag

When should I replace my brake pads?

Rim brakes: replace the brake pads when the braking surface is clearly worn down.

Disc brakes: replace the brake pads when there is around 0.5 mm remaining or if the wear is uneven.
