In a sustainable direction. Inspiring a sustainable lifestyle.

The bicycle is a powerful symbol of environmental awareness, physical activity, and health. That is why it is natural for Vätternrundan to actively work towards sustainable development. By getting people moving, we aim to contribute to better public health and inspire a lifestyle filled with exercise, experiences, and community.

Sustainability has been part of Vätternrundan since the very beginning in 1966. The event was founded, in part, as a response to an increasingly sedentary lifestyle, which makes sustainability a natural part of our daily work and deeply rooted in our DNA. Our efforts are based on three dimensions – social, environmental, and economic sustainability – and are aligned with the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

Certified according to ISO 20121

In the summer of 2013, Vätternrundan became the first sporting event in Sweden to be certified according to ISO 20121, an international standard for sustainable event management. The certification means we work in a structured way with clear goals and continuous follow-up to constantly improve our sustainability efforts. It is also a confirmation of our ambition to stay at the forefront and take responsibility for the impact we have on society.

Some of our key sustainability priorities include contributing financially to local sports clubs and associations, increasing safety for participants, volunteers, and road users, reducing environmental impact from transport and materials, and engaging participants in reducing littering – for example through designated litter zones along the route.

An important part of the local community

Since 1966, Vätternrundan has been organized for and together with local sports clubs and associations. Each year, several million SEK are distributed to the organizations that contribute through voluntary work during the events. For many of them, this income is crucial and helps sustain their ongoing activities.

Vätternrundan also plays an important role in the local and regional economy. According to a tourism economic study by HUI Research (2023), the event generates a total economic impact of over SEK 100 million. Visitors from across Sweden and around the world contribute through accommodation, dining, shopping, and other services, creating growth and jobs in the municipality.

By attracting so many participants and spectators each year, Vätternrundan not only strengthens interest in cycling and health – it also serves as an important driver for the regional economy and the tourism industry.
