It’s easy to think that the adventure ends as you roll across the finish line in Motala – but that’s not the case. Around Lake Vättern, there are plenty of must-visit gems. We’ve gathered some of our favourites, so you can continue exploring the magical surroundings of Vättern. With or without your bike. Enjoy!

1. Enjoy leisurely cycling along the Göta Canal

The Göta Canal runs through Motala and is one of Sweden’s most ambitious construction projects ever built. Along the canal runs a cycling route that has become something of a Swedish classic. The route has been named one of Sweden’s best and offers plenty of attractions and cozy places to stop for coffee and watch the boats go by.

2. Stroll around Vadstena

Vadstena is perhaps best known for its magnificent Renaissance castle – but the town is just as charming for anyone wanting to enjoy small-town life. Take a walk along Storgatan in the old town center, browse cozy boutiques and second-hand shops, or relax at one of the town’s cafés and outdoor seating areas.

3. Grab an ice cream in Hästholmen

Ice cream always tastes a little better by the water. Head down to the harbor in Hästholmen and look for the red wooden house where 31:ans Glass & Kök is located – one of Sweden’s most popular ice cream spots, specializing in Italian gelato.

4. Play golf and explore the trails of Omberg

Omberg is home to one of Sweden’s most beautiful golf courses, offering fantastic views of Lake Vättern. While you’re here, take the opportunity to explore the area on foot or by bike – Omberg features beautiful hiking and cycling trails through breathtaking scenery. Want to stay a little longer? 5. Stock up on chocolate in Ödeshög

If you love chocolate, a stop at Narr Chocolate in Ödeshög is pure paradise. Inside, you’ll find premium chocolates sold by weight, beautifully packaged gift boxes, and generous selections of treats. A delight for both the eyes and the taste buds.

6. Get a sugar rush in Gränna

It won’t take long before you understand why Gränna is called Sweden’s candy capital. The streets are lined with shops selling freshly made candy canes (”polkagrisar”) and sweets. In several stores, you can even watch the craftsmanship up close as the candy is handmade.

7. Bike around Visingsö

Hop on the ferry at Gränna harbor and just 30 minutes later you’ll arrive at the idyllic island of Visingsö. Rent a bike right at the harbor and discover the island at a relaxed pace – through oak forests, open landscapes, and with views of Lake Vättern always close by. Stop at the Näs castle ruins, visit local farm shops, or take a swim from one of the island’s piers. Visingsö is best experienced from the saddle of a bicycle.

8. Visit Småland’s Tuscany

Along the eastern slopes of Lake Vättern lies Äppeldalen – often called Småland’s Tuscany. The area is known for its fruit orchards, berry farms, and local cider producers. If it’s time for a break, a stop at Rudenstams Farm Shop & Café is a perfect choice.

9. Take a nostalgic tour in Huskvarna

The Husqvarna Museum is housed in an old factory building, where you can explore the many products the company has produced since it was founded over 300 years ago. Nostalgia is guaranteed! If you’d like to stay overnight, check in at Slottsvillan nearby or the charming boutique hotel Huskvarna Stadshotell. The next day, head out on an action-packed mountain biking adventure at Huskvarnaberget, starting and finishing at IKHP-stugan at the top of the hill.

10. Pick blueberries in Hökensås

About 40–50 kilometers north of Jönköping lies Hökensås, a fantastic forest area with scenic trails winding through pine woods – perfect for cycling and hiking. Bring a basket along, as the forest is a treasure trove for golden chanterelle and blueberry picking.

11. Relax in a sauna in Hjo

Hjo is a cozy wooden town perhaps best known for its colorful bathing cabins along Guldkroksbadet. Feeling chilly? Book an hour in the sauna cabin, where you can enjoy a hot sauna and refreshing dips in the lake all year round.

12. Add some excitement with history in Karlsborg

Karlsborg Fortress began construction in 1819, took 90 years to complete, and is now an exciting destination for anyone interested in history. Join a guided tour and learn how soldiers once lived in the fortress. Just outside Karlsborg lies Djäknesundet, a unique swimming spot with almost turquoise water. Spread out your towel on the rocks, dive in, and swim in the clear waters of Lake Vättern.

13. Enjoy the archipelago in Askersund

If you’re longing for a beautiful and idyllic harbor town, Askersund is the place to go. Stroll through the harbor, admire the boats, grab an ice cream, or enjoy freshly caught fish for lunch. Rent a canoe and explore Lake Vättern’s only true archipelago.

14. Drink magical water in Medevibrunn

Since the 1600s, Medevibrunn has been a place where people come to relax, enjoy the beautiful surroundings, and drink its health-giving water. In the past, people believed the water had magical powers that could even cure vision problems. Today, visitors mainly come to admire the charming old buildings and enjoy walks in the surrounding nature.
