SUB 9
The fastest cyclists in Vätternrundan complete the ride in approximately 7–9 hours. To create a safer and better experience for all participants, the start times have been adjusted so that the fastest groups start later than the others. This reduces the number of overtakes, which is one of the biggest risk factors during the event.

Around 1,000 cyclists are offered the opportunity to start at midday on Saturday. Places in these start groups are allocated through pre-booked cycling clubs and companies.
Other fast cyclists start in the regular start groups, which run until approximately 06:30 on Saturday morning. After that, there is a break before the SUB 9 groups start between 11:30 and 12:10, with two-minute intervals between groups.
The later start means that the fastest groups will only begin to catch up with other participants on the northwestern side of Lake Vättern, contributing to increased safety during the event.

Rules for SUB 9 groups
In recent years, Vätternrundan has offered some cyclists aiming to complete the ride in under nine hours the opportunity to start on Saturday morning. The main purpose of this is to reduce the number of overtakes during the event and thereby improve safety for all participants.
This has proven successful and very popular. Since 2014, the start time has been moved to Saturday lunchtime to further reduce overtaking.
Vätternrundan is the world’s largest recreational cycling event, not a race. It is of utmost importance that everyone feels welcome, regardless of their pace.
Following evaluations together with the Police, the Swedish Transport Administration, and the County Administrative Board, the Vätternrundan organization has decided that the following rules apply:
- The SUB 9 groups will start between 11:30 and approximately 12:10.
- The interval between groups is 2 minutes.
- All applicable traffic laws, rules, and regulations must be followed.
- There will be marshal motorcycles along the course. These vehicles have no authority but are there to warn other road users, course marshals, and cyclists along the route. Note: Other traffic will be present along the entire course.
- No support vehicles are allowed, whether private or corporate. Vätternrundan provides a rolling support service with bike mechanics and first aid-trained personnel for SUB 9 groups.
- Vätternrundan’s regular feed stations will not be available to SUB 9 groups until they catch up with the main field. There are two fixed feed zones (Bankeryd after approx. 110 km and Karlsborg after approx. 210 km). Those providing support at these locations should, where possible, use alternative routes to and from the sites. Vätternrundan will also provide service here with sports drinks, water, buns, and bananas.
- No feeding, pacing, or drafting from motor vehicles is allowed. Feeding is only permitted at the designated locations and must be done manually, with vehicles parked safely for other participants and officials. Each group is responsible for leaving the feed zones clean and tidy.
- Respect must be shown to all other road users. Instructions from officials must be followed.
- Littering is prohibited by Swedish law. Do not discard waste along the course—carry it with you and dispose of it at feed stations or in designated litter zones along the route. Thank you for helping us protect the environment.
- SUB 9 groups and their members who do not follow Vätternrundan’s rules risk losing the opportunity to apply for future events.
The Vätternrundan organization expects all involved to respect these rules so that we can proudly carry this Swedish tradition forward.
Each group leader is personally responsible, by signature, for ensuring that this information has been communicated to all group members.
