Vätternrundan Engages Participants in New Sustainability Initiative with Renall
In 2013, Vätternrundan became Sweden’s first environmentally certified long-distance cycling event. Now, its sustainability efforts are being further developed together with Renall – experts in waste management, recycling, and circular flows. In 2013, Vätternrundan became Sweden’s first environmentally certified long-distance cycling event. Now, its sustainability efforts are being further developed together with Renall – experts in waste management, recycling, and circular flows. The goal is to reduce Vätternrundan’s climate impact and create a traceable and future-proof waste management solution.
Vätternrundan is the world’s largest recreational cycling event – a complex and vibrant occasion involving thousands of participants, hundreds of kilometers of roads, service stations, and extensive logistical flows.
– Our operation is large and complex. To continue leading in sustainability, we need to work with partners who possess specialist expertise. Renall adds knowledge and capacity that enable us to take a major step forward, says Oskar Sundblad, CEO of Vätternrundan.
Renall collects, sorts, transports, and processes waste every day for cities and businesses across Sweden.
– For us, Vätternrundan is a unique platform. Here, we have the opportunity to demonstrate what modern, innovative, and creative waste solutions can achieve – in practice, on a large scale, and in real time, says Håkan Sammons, Sales and Marketing Manager at Renall.
Less should be wasted, and more should be recovered.
– We know participants want to do the right thing – so our task is to make it easy. This year, we are introducing clear, smart waste zones and creative features, such as target markers at the bins. This makes sorting both easier and more enjoyable while cycling at speed, says Oskar Sundblad, CEO of Vätternrundan.
Participants should feel that they are an active part of a larger sustainability initiative. Smart waste management should not be seen as an obstacle – but as a natural part of a modern event experience.
– This initiative strengthens not only us, but also our entire partner network, the municipalities where we operate, and all participants. It becomes easier to do the right thing and clearer how every choice impacts the bigger picture, says Oskar Sundblad, CEO of Vätternrundan.
Vätternrundan’s goal is to minimize its climate impact by 2035. This requires clear routines, traceability, smart sorting, and above all: partnerships where everyone learns from one another.
– Our ambition is to map all waste fractions, follow up on data, and develop the solution year by year. This will become a premium case demonstrating what sustainable waste management can look like at major events, says Håkan Sammons, Sales and Marketing Manager at Renall.
Together, they are creating a more sustainable event, a stronger industry, and a better future for everyone who cycles, works, and lives around Lake Vättern.
– This is a journey – and we are only at the beginning. The next step? Expanding our annual KPI follow-up, continuing to develop the sorting system, and working step by step toward CO₂-neutral transportation, says Oskar Sundblad, CEO of Vätternrundan.
