More and more people are taking up the challenge – A Swedish Classic is growing
What about the New Year’s resolution for 2026? Is it true that an En Svensk Klassiker participant is “born” in the champagne bubbles on New Year’s Eve and then “baptized” in the blueberry soup at Vasaloppet?

What about the New Year’s resolution for 2026? Is it true that an En Svensk Klassiker participant is “born” in the champagne bubbles on New Year’s Eve and then “baptized” in the blueberry soup at Vasaloppet? Yes, that comparison has been made. With a clear upward trend, En Svensk Klassiker inspires movement throughout the year and continues a Swedish tradition that creates pride, community, joy, and lifelong memories – something that this year led to the highest number of completed Klassiker since 2018. Over 4,600 participants, nearly half of them women, completed their Klassiker this year.
En Svensk Klassiker challenges people through Sweden’s most classic races Organized by Engelbrektsloppet or Vasaloppet (cross-country skiing), Vätternrundan (cycling), Vansbrosimningen (swimming), and TCS Lidingöloppet (running), the Klassiker series allows participants to test their endurance and experience Swedish nature – from mountains and forests to lakes and open landscapes – in the company of others.
To be officially counted in the statistics and receive a medal and diploma, participants must register their Klassiker; this does not happen automatically. To date, 123,965 unique Klassiker registrations have been recorded since the start in 1971, of which 4,303 have been registered so far this year. Of these 123,965 registrations, 83,154 have completed the full En Svensk Klassiker. The remaining participants completed shorter versions: En Svensk Klassiker Halva, En Svensk Klassiker Tjej, or En Svensk Klassiker Korta.
Michael Sturehed, chairman of En Svensk Klassiker, comments on the year:
“It is gratifying to see how En Svensk Klassiker once again attracts so many people from across the country. That we now have the highest number of completed Klassiker since before the pandemic demonstrates Swedes’ strong desire to challenge themselves while being part of our unique mass movement. Particularly encouraging is the balanced gender distribution among participants – nearly half are women – which emphasizes that En Svensk Klassiker is for everyone. We look forward to even more people joining the community in 2026 and perhaps letting their New Year’s resolution mark the start of a new life.”
