Vätternrundan 2010 – a manifestation of cycling
A summary of this year’s event
Starters: 17 611
Finishers: 16 766
On the Thursday before the event the Vätternrundan Organization invited speakers to a discussion about the role of the bicycle in today’s traffic situation.
That was the starter gun that set off the cycling euphoria that hit Motala the past weekend, starting with the Swedish Cycling Championship for members of the Swedish Police and Fire Departments, followed by Eurosport Invitational, Eurosport Vättern Grand Prix and then a record large Vätternrundan.
Never before has there been so many registered for the event, so many in the start folds or so many that completed the course. The number of participants that had to seek hospital care was 44, a record low number, and there were no serious injuries.
Motala was in a festive mood, and despite the odd raindrop during the night the cyclists and organizers gave Vätternrundan 2010 a very high rating. The new possibility for Sub 9 groups to start at a separate time on Saturday morning also worked well and led to fewer cyclists being overtaken by faster cyclists.
“Separating the start groups with different speeds turned out to be everything we hoped for and now we are going to evaluate this trial run with the police. We hope to develop this idea further in the years to come” said Vätternrundan’s General Manager Eva-Lena Frick.
Vätternrundan 2010 can be summarized as the year all records were broken.
“We will continue to develop the events in 2011 and beyond. Our main priority now is our goal of a traffic-free event, ” continued Eva-Lena Frick.
